When you travel, you probably see many people lugging around big, bulky suitcases, carry-on bags, and maybe even large purses to act as a second carry-on. When you see this, do you think “wow, that’s just like me” or “wow, I’m glad I’m not that person”? Do you want to cut back on your packing so your trips are a little easier, but are afraid you’ll forget something? You can master the art of packing light for your vacation without the worry that you’re forgetting something.

The first step is to pick out the items you think you’ll want to bring with you. Grab everything you can think of. At this point, the amount doesn’t matter. Spread the items out on your bed or floor so you can see everything. Pick each item up and scrutinize it carefully, determining if you really need it or not. If not, put it out of your sight. Avoid packing the “just-in-case” items. These will only take up space. If you find you absolutely must have one of these items once you’re on your vacation, you can purchase it at your destination. Once you’ve done this with each item, you’ll have a smaller amount of items in front of you.

Take another look at the clothes you have in your pile. Do you really need all of them? Will your destination have a washer and dryer you can use so you can eliminate some of your clothes? Since clothes are the bulkiest items you pack, the less you can take with you, the better.

Now decide what bag to use. If your load is small enough, consider using a backpack or similar bag, which can then be used as your carry-on, and lets you avoid checking in any bags and waiting at the turnstile at the airport. Keep in mind that you may purchase new items, including toiletries, on your vacation, and leave room in your bag for them.
