Preparing for a trip to India

  • Make sure you have a current passport and visa, without these you wont be able to leave the country.
  • Immunizations are vitally important, without them you leave yourself open to all sorts of illnesses and diseases. Being sick on your holiday is not fun.
  • Taking out travelers insurance before you go is a very solid investment. Nothing ruins your trip more than losing your credit card.
  • Be aware of the security threats. India has a high rate of terrorist attacks and a high rate of street crimes. Be ready for this, take photocopies of your visa and passport and keep them in a safe place. Keep things like wallets, and credit cards close to your body. Be wary of what you eat and drink, there have been reports of tourists being drugged and robbed. Don’t leave you luggage unattended and don’t walk alone at night.
  • When packing clothes remember to pack light breathable cottons, it’s better to take modest clothing. Nothing too flashy or too revealing. Indians have a different set of morals and might some clothing offensive.
  • Be sure to bring all medications required, also insect repellents and diarrhea medication would be advisable.
  • Taking a satellite cell phone would be a great idea, if there is an emergency you can always call home or the local authorities.
  • Make sure you know where the embassy is. In a tight spot they can always help you out.
  • When you arrive in India your first stop should be to the currency exchange. Be sure not to get too much initially, having too much cash on you could make you a target of thief’s.
  • Before taking any photographs of local landmarks or building, make sure you are allowed too. In some countries taking a photo of a government building is a serious offense.
